From Augsburg Elli and her mother are shipped to Waldlager, where they find news that her brother Bubi is at the camp.  They meet with him, but he is unrecognizable, looking like a skeleton.  Elli talks about her first encounter after giving him food, saying, “We watch aghast as Bubi scrambles to his feet and, bread in hand, trudges away, clumps of mud tumbling from his tatters.”
